Heart Felt Condolences
I don't know that there is ever a good time to lose a loved one. I lost my dad while I was still in my 20's and it took a hard toll on heart strings. All last week I kept in touch with John with how his dad was doing and my heart went out to him and the family. I didn't post anything as I felt it was a personal time for them and felt it wasn't the world's need to know what they were dealing with. C was over riding in the Giro and my heart went out more and more to the entire family as the week went on. Each day seemed a little sadder than the one before. Having been through it with my dad and my father-in-law I knew signs and things to be expected. I offered John an ear and friendship as best I could to help make it even a slight bit easier.
Sunday morning, I think even before 7 John called me with the news. It was a call that I knew would be coming but not any less sad to get. My heart, thoughts, prayers, and most sincere condolences went out to the entire VandeVelde family. I was asked to drop a note to CN, VN, and the Versus crew so I did without delay. Then I dropped C a note telling him win or lose it didn't matter, just ride with his heart. And he did, finishing his Pink Jersey Giro with a 5th place in the days TT. A beautiful high note to end a hard race and heavy hearted day on. It was sweet that Phil Liggett announced his condolences during Versus coverage in the afternoon. I hope the family realizes how much we all had them on our hearts. Phil emailed me back yesterday and again had touching words for the family.

Albert C. VandeVelde - Born: March 7, 1921 in Chicago. Passed Away June 1, 2008 at his Glen Ellyn home (50 year resident). Retired after 35 years of service as a pilot for TWA. WWII Navy Pilot. 2008 Giro d'Italia - Stage 1 TTT

I am totally tickled PINK!!!! To say today was a great day would be such an understatement but today WAS a GREAT day!!! Slipstream won the TTT and C crossed the line first putting him into the purdy pink Maglia Rosa! Watching this morning was just awesome and nail biting seeing teams like CSC and High Road at the split times. Even Barloworld was giving it hell. I hadn't talked to John since last Friday when he left for Girona and I was losing it. Thank goodness he's back so I can stay caught up! I so hope the CTV link works so he can see C and the team flying across the line!

I for one could not be happier for C and the team. They worked and trained hard for this. ((I am still laughing - Go Cinzano!)) To see it all pay off and to see C put on that jersey just totally rocked. He's so modest about it too but C - that smile said it all and you looked awesome in PINK!!! It was great team work and they certainly gave it all to get it done. Even Millar popped right at the end. If they hadn't won it, I don't think anyone could ever say they didn't give it everything they had. That it all worked and they did do it?!?! Serious argyle kick ass!!! Huge KUDO's guys!!!
I'm not sure what's going to happen tomorrow and other than live text following, there's no video coverage until VS in the afternoon. Very bummed. I think Slipstream's going to be able to hang on to this for at least a few days and I'll be cheering for them everyday and driving John nuts with calls. I'm hoping that C and DZ get the nods for the Olympics too but I am clueless how they sort all of that out. Keep it going guys!!!

VandeVelde & Track
So after talking to John today about how awesome the speed has been at Manchester this week, I couldn't help but look for some past articles on him and C on the track. I came up with a couple stat articles but nothing very good in the write up department. John was recalling some of his times, C's, and then putting that into perspective of the Team Pursuit winning times. Holy crap, they are flying is about the best to sum it up. John was awesome, C was incredible, and the guys now, wow. Track racing on tv can be kind of boring (to me, although I love watching the Madison) but there is NO denying the thrill of seeing the speeds they go. Being at a track and seeing it first hand I have been told is a very cool experience.
John was at the '68 Olympics in Mexico City (4000m Team Pursuit) and the '72 Olympics in Munich (4000m Team Pursuit-17th and 4000m Individual Pursuit). I have often fessed up, I am like a little kid listening to stories. John shares them with the best of them and I never get tired of listening.
John Vande Velde - 2004 US Bicycling Hall of Fame Inductee
A two-time Olympic track cyclist (1972, 1976), Vande Velde also captured three national individual pursuit crowns (1969-70, 1972). His son, Christian, was one of the top youth riders at the 1999 Tour de France, and was instrumental in Lance Armstrong's victory at the Tour de France. A veteran of six-day racing, Vande Velde also won a bronze medal at the 1971 Pan American Games (team pursuit). The elder Vande Velde also owns the Vandedrome, a portable wooden velodrome that has been used for numerous events, including the 1998 Goodwill games in New York. He is also a member of the UCI Track Commission.
Christian was an alternate at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta and was at the '00 Olympics in Sidney (Men's Indiviual Pursuit 12th 4:31.528)

Vande Velde overcame some of the bitterness from more than a decade ago, when he failed to make the U.S. Olympic team for the 1996 Atlanta Games. Track cycling was held in a temporary velodrome at Stone Mountain.
"It would be a lie to say I didn't have a lot of memories going around that park yesterday," the 30-year-old Vande Velde said. "I actually thought of quitting after putting so much into making the Olympics, then not making that team."

Time down in the Ice Box
What a weekend?!? Once again I am not sure where the time has gone but I have enjoyed another break with less work and more rest. Today I spent a lot of time working out while taking breaks to warm up and doing what I can to clear out favorites and cookies from the computer. The whole time I kept wondering when and IF the rain was ever going to stop. The storm that rolled in late last night has kept the sump pump going all day. The rain was a pure down pour earlier and even in the basement, you could hear the hail and wind tourmenting the house. The back yard, it looks like an underground pool at this point.
Spending a lot of time down here in the ice box (aka basement) today is really making me look forward to getting my new lap top in a couple weeks. Not being one to know a great deal on computers, I've spent hours checking them out the past few days. Thankfully places like Gateway and Dell will listen to what you want to use it for and "build" you one to best suite you. Then with that info as a solid starting point, it's on to checking out deals and packages that meet that. A little nicer than shopping for a car but still stressful in wondering if a decision made is a good one. Thus far I think I've checked enough things out to be pretty happy.
Yesterday I spent some time going through a boatload of pics that I had of Christian. Last fall he gave me a signed jersey and I'm getting it framed. The guy doing it tells me to include some pictures to frame with it and it sounded easy at first until I had to decide which ones to include. My goal was to keep it from 2005-2007 while he was on Team CSC and after a late night, I think C would like the ones I've pulled out. I used to pull the stuff I found of him and send it to John since John was blocked at work from cycling sites. It surprised me a little to realize how much stuff I had.
In going through emails earlier I found a nice article on Slipstream Ego's I thought I'd share. There's a pic of C from the Postal Days. The article explains C's role a bit and shares some notes from the riders.

Christian VandeVelde's Broadband Racer Collection
Going through emails this weekend I found some old ones that I had sent John and Peg at one point or another. Instead of just deleting them - as its good entertainment - I thought I'd put some of the links here. Enjoy!

Getting Started...
I started following cycling and quickly became a huge fan of Christain Vande Velde's within days of meeting and working with his dad. That was several years ago and as John and I remained friends, my enjoyment of following C only grew. Last year, I found myself having maybe too much fun with following cycling but it was a great escape in life at the time so friends went along with it only encouraging the fun.
In following the past several years, I've kept an eye on:
Christian - of course!, George Hincapie - a sentimental favorite, Jens Voigt & Bobby Julich - fell in love with them after watching the Overcoming dvd, and of course the lovable Dave Zabriskie (aka Nancy Reagan). Jens, Bobby, and DZ were C's teammates, and George was at C's wedding and they're great friends so everything was good. I was about as loyal as one could get. Plus, John loves George and Jens, and he shares hilarious stories on DZ so things were really fun to keep in touch with. I also love Fabian and Stuey but more so as C's teammates. I like Chris Horner too, as I that boy has some "tell like it is" spunk. So that has been my groupie status through last summer - C, George, Jens, Bobby, DZ, and occasionally Horner.
C and DZ then made a move to this team I knew little about - Team Slipstream. I had heard of it as Will Frischkorn started writing diaries on Velo back in March which I had been reading - and thoroughly enjoying (you should check out The Apartment and EuroLogic ones - you won't be sorry you did) . But they were leaving Team CSC, the #1 team 3 years running?!? I was confused (never takes much really but still). John and I talked and I threw out all sorts of questions.
I did my research and reading thing and found out how awesome Slipstream was and how incredible the opportunity was for the guys. If you're going to make a change, this is one sure way to do so. And now, C and Will would be on the same team so I would no longer have any disloyalty in following Will which is cooler by the day! Of course the more I read, the more I loved the guys on the team. I started reading stuff from Mike Friedman (aka Meatball) too as sometimes humor is the only medicine for a bad day. What a great group of guys to stalk, I mean follow!
BUT of course it couldn't/didn't quite stop there. In following these guys as much as I enjoy doing, I've found that I needed to expand the group a little bit to enjoy the full effect of their goofing around. Will and Mike's old teammate and Meatball's certain lover, Brad Huff (now at Jelly Belly) is wrapped in their chronicles and a blast to read. Add Mike Creed (he's at Rock Racing this year - I believe he signed knowing Frankie who's now gone so I actually feel for him on that team - I really dislike Ball and its sad to know the crap he's aiming to get is being grouped at the riders too), and characters like Mike Jones and The Bird?!? Plus I still enjoy reading Dan Schmatz stuff regularly. The list continues to grow and at times, I can't seem to get enough. It's refreshing and pretty funny stuff.
So what's a girl to do?!? I love reading their stuff and someday, hope to meet at least a few of them. Since most are at Elk Grove and/or Downers, its not all that unrealistic. I love C to death and he will forever be my favorite. Because I get to hear so much from John, it's hard not to pull for C, and his little one Uma - OMG is she a sweet cutie! I'm pretty thrilled John shares so much and that C seems to enjoy the fanfare. I'm proud, and even honored that we have such really great, talented guys to follow. They not only rock on the bike but they're amazing characters off it! If they only knew how fun it is to stalk, I mean follow them!!!
These guys are great and I hope if you've stumbled upon this blog that you check them out. They'll make you laugh AND cry and for all GOOD reasons!!! Enjoy!!!

So what's a girl to do?!? I love reading their stuff and someday, hope to meet at least a few of them. Since most are at Elk Grove and/or Downers, its not all that unrealistic. I love C to death and he will forever be my favorite. Because I get to hear so much from John, it's hard not to pull for C, and his little one Uma - OMG is she a sweet cutie! I'm pretty thrilled John shares so much and that C seems to enjoy the fanfare. I'm proud, and even honored that we have such really great, talented guys to follow. They not only rock on the bike but they're amazing characters off it! If they only knew how fun it is to stalk, I mean follow them!!!
